In recent years, development programs have shifted away from vertical programming to initiatives that bring together a combination of topics/approaches within a single program. This shift is reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals, indicating that integrated programming is a priority across the range of global development areas.

Integration covers at least three approaches to campaign development:

  1. Including more than one health topic in a project
  2. Utilizing multiple communication channels (e.g., mass media plus mobilization of social networks in the community)
  3. Working at multiple levels (e.g., linking service quality improvement or improved counseling to family health decision-making)

The World Health Organization states that integration is needed in order to ensure that, “people get the care they need, when they need it, in ways that are user-friendly, achieve the desired results and provide value for money.”

Accompanying the trend for integrated development is a growing interest in integrated social and behavior change (SBC) programming as a critical strategy to improve health and development outcomes.

In this Trending Topic we present tools for development, management, and evaluation of integrated SBC programs as well as examples of materials produced by integrated programs worldwide.

If you have any materials which you would like to add to this collection, please contact us – simply write to Susan Leibtag, Health COMpass Curator, at susan.leibtag@jhu.edu. Thank you!
