Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-1-Infected Adults and Adolescents

These guidelines spell out why strict adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is key to sustained HIV suppression, reduced risk of drug resistance, improved overall health, quality of life, and survival, as well as decreased risk of HIV transmission.

They provide updated guidance on assessing and monitoring adherence and outlines strategies to help patients maintain high levels of adherence, including utilizing approaches of interpersonal communication and counseling. The guidelines include a table explaining strategies to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy and retention in care.
