The Gender Guide for Health Communication Programs

The purpose of the Gender Guide is to encourage the incorporation of gender-based roles and responsibilities in the design, implementation, and evaluation of health communication programs.

The guide does not directly address broad-based issues of gender equity. It does, however, provide questions to help program managers determine how gender roles, for both women and men, may impede access to health information, restrict use of health services, or limit beneficial health outcomes. By identifying this information, health communication programs can encourage individuals and communities to pay attention to resolving gender inequities.

The Gender Guide is designed for professionals engaged in the development of health communication programs—program managers, designers, planners, implementers, and evaluators. It follows the five steps for developing a health communication program: 1) Analysis;2) Strategic Design; 3) Message /Materials Development, Pretesting & Production; 4) Management, Implementation, & Monitoring; and 5) Evaluation. The guide also provides questions to identify and address gender issues to ensure that gender awareness is part of a program’s design, implementation, and evaluation.
